Houiku and Hotei: Two Rivals of Kuniyoshi's School” catalogue

Yoshikazu Ochiai (1833-1903) and Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839-92) were brothers and students of Kuniyoshi, one of the most famous ukiyoe artists of the late Edo period. Yoshikazu and Yoshitoshi were in their mid-30s when the Meiji Restoration took place, and they are known as the “last Ukiyo-e artists” of their generation. This exhibition looks back on how they fought against the decline of Ukiyo-e in their time, focusing on their valuable private collections. This catalogue includes many of their representative works and unknown paintings, many of which have never been shown in color before. Among them, the 100-figure series of warrior paintings by Hoki “Taiheiki Eiyuuden” and the 33-figure series of warrior paintings by Yoshitoshi “Yoshitoshi Musha Noryu” are a must-see. The two warrior paintings are stamped in red and blue metal foil on the bottom of the cover.
